Why are my gutters pulling away from the fascia board?

Gutters pull away from the fascia when the fasteners holding them lose their grip, either because the hangers or spikes worked loose under the weight of water and debris, or because the fascia wood behind them has softened from rot. Either way, the gutter no longer has anything solid to hold onto.
The nuance is the fascia. If the board is sound, a pro can often re-hang the gutter with proper hangers and reset the pitch. If it is soft or rotted, re-fastening into it will not last, and the board has to be repaired first.
Why it happens
A gutter full of leaves, pine needles or shingle grit holds a lot of water, and in a Florida summer downpour that load arrives fast. If the gutter is undersized or has too few downspouts, it overflows and fills. Long-spaced or aging hangers then bend, and fasteners slowly back out of the wood.
Water is the other cause. Overflow and leaking corners soak the fascia behind the gutter. Florida's long wet season and constant humidity keep that wood damp, and rot can set in where it never dries out. Rotted wood cannot hold a screw, so the gutter sags away from the house.
Storms can add to it. Strong wind and wind-driven rain during hurricane season can tug on a gutter that was already loose. Salt air near the coast can also corrode fasteners and hangers over time.
What you can check yourself (from the ground)
Look at the gap
Stand back and see whether the gutter is separated along its whole length or only in one spot. A gap in one spot points to failed hangers, while a long sag can mean overload or poor pitch.
Watch it in the rain
During a heavy storm, look for water spilling over the front edge, pouring out at corners or running down the wall behind the gutter. Note where it happens, since that tells the pro where to look.
Look at the fascia
Check the board for peeling paint, dark stains, swelling or a wavy edge. Binoculars from the ground work well. These are signs of water damage behind the gutter.
Check where the downspouts empty
See whether water lands near the foundation or flows away from it. Pooling at the base of the wall means the system is not carrying water far enough.
When to stop and call a pro
Leave the ladder and the roof edge to a pro. A loose gutter full of water is heavy and can shift suddenly, and working at the roofline is a fall risk. Call if the gutter is visibly hanging, if the fascia feels or looks soft, or if you see water getting behind the gutter into the soffit or wall.
If the repair involves the fascia, soffit or roof edge, ask your pro what the work covers and whether a permit or specific license applies. Florida requires a state license for roofing and other regulated trades, and you can verify a license on the Florida DBPR website. Confirm permit rules with your local building department. If you live in a condo or HOA community, exterior changes may also need association approval. We match you with a vetted pro near you and book the visit.
Your MB pro handles the permit when the job needs one. You can look up a contractor's license at Florida DBPR.
What a pro will do
- Find the cause firstYour MB pro checks hanger spacing, pitch, downspout count and the fascia itself, then gives you a free estimate before any work starts.
- Repair the fascia and soffitRotted or soft sections are cut out and replaced so the gutter has solid wood to fasten into.
- Re-hang and reset pitchThe gutter is re-hung with properly spaced hangers and sloped toward the downspouts so water drains instead of sitting.
- Reseal and resize if neededCorners and end caps are resealed. If the system overflows in heavy rain, the pro may recommend seamless aluminum gutters formed on site, with more or larger downspouts routed away from the foundation.

Related questions
- Can I just screw the gutter back into the fascia?
- Only if the wood behind it is solid, and even then new screws in old holes often fail. A pro can tell whether the board will hold, and spacing hangers properly matters more than adding a few screws.
- Does a gutter pulling away mean the fascia is rotted?
- Not always. Loose hangers and a heavy debris load can do it on sound wood. But if the gap came with stains, soft spots or peeling paint, rot is likely and the board should be checked.
- What affects the cost of fixing this?
- The length of gutter involved, how high and hard to reach the roofline is, how much fascia or soffit needs replacing, and whether the system needs more downspouts or new gutters. Hidden damage found once it is opened up also matters. Your MB pro gives a free estimate after looking at it.
- Will gutter guards stop this from happening?
- Guards reduce clogging from leaves and shingle grit, which lowers the weight on the hangers. They do not fix rotted fascia or weak fastening, so those need to be sorted out first.
