Seamless gutter & downspout calculator
Enter the roof edges that get gutters, the roof footprint and its pitch. See the linear feet, how many downspouts and what size, and the hangers, elbows and caps the job takes — sized for Florida rain.
Why 6-inch in South Florida
A 5-inch K-style gutter is the common size nationally, and in moderate rain it drains a lot of roof. Florida rain comes harder: a summer storm can drop an inch or more in an hour, so a 5-inch gutter that looks big enough on paper overflows at the corners. The calculator recommends 6-inch when the drainage area per downspout gets past about 1,400 sq ft or the roof is steep, and pairs it with 3×4 in downspouts.
Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil to the exact length of each run, so the material is counted in linear feet, not in 10-ft sticks. Your MB pro measures the house; this calculator tells you roughly what the job involves.
What a good Florida gutter job looks like
- Hidden hangers every 2 ft. Florida wind lifts gutters hung on spikes or wide-spaced hangers; hidden hangers screwed into the rafter tails hold.
- Aluminum gauge: .032 in is the heavier stock and holds its shape under ladders, wind and palm fronds; .027 in is lighter and dents more easily.
- Slope about 1/4 in per 10 ft toward each downspout. Too flat and water stands; too steep and it looks crooked from the street.
- Downspouts discharge away from the foundation — a splash block or an extension of 4 to 6 ft — and never onto a neighbor's lot.
- Gutter guards help under oaks and pines; palm fronds and seed pods still need clearing from the top.
- Permits are not usually needed to replace gutters, but a few cities and HOAs want notice. Ask your MB pro, or check with your city.
Your MB pro checks the fascia behind the old gutters, resets the pitch and routes the downspouts away from the slab. See seamless gutters for what pros in our network cover across Florida.
