What does my AC cost to run?

Enter your system's size, its SEER rating, how long it runs and your electricity rate. See the kWh and the cost per day, month and year — at your own rate.

On the outdoor unit's nameplate. A 36,000 BTU unit is 3 tons.

1 to 12. In South Florida the AC often runs most of the year.

A dirty filter or low refrigerant can raise this

The math assumes the system runs at its rated efficiency. A clogged filter, dirty coils, a refrigerant leak or leaky ducts make it run longer for the same cooling, so the real number can be higher than this estimate. Changing the filter is the one fix you can do yourself.

Since January 1, 2023, new central air conditioners and heat pumps must meet the U.S. Department of Energy's SEER2 efficiency standards. A higher rating means fewer kWh for the same cooling — try a higher SEER in the calculator to compare.

When to have a pro check it

  • It runs almost nonstop but the house doesn't reach the temperature you set.
  • Air from the vents feels warm or weak.
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil.
  • Water around the air handler, or a stain on the ceiling below it.
  • It turns on and off every few minutes.
  • New noises: buzzing, grinding, rattling or squealing.
  • Your power bill jumps with no change in how you use the AC.
