Why does my carpet feel damp and smell musty during humid weather?

Carpet feels damp and smells musty in humid weather because the fibers, backing and pad absorb moisture from the air, and once they stay wet, mildew starts to grow. The musty smell is usually that growth, not just dirt on the surface.

The nuance is where the dampness is. If the whole house feels sticky, the cause is usually indoor humidity or an air conditioner that isn't keeping up. If one patch stays damp, look for a spill, a pet accident, a leak or a moisture source under or beside the carpet.

Why it happens in Florida

Florida's long, hot, humid wet season keeps indoor air moist, especially in closed-up rooms, closets and homes where the AC cycles off often. Carpet and the pad beneath it soak up that moisture slowly, and a thick pad can stay damp long after the surface feels dry.

Moisture that sits in carpet gives mold and mildew what they need. Old spills, pet urine that has soaked into the pad, a small plumbing or AC condensate leak, or wind-driven rain coming in past a door or window seal can all feed the same musty smell.

Dirt matters too. Dust, pollen, pet dander and grit hold moisture against the fibers, so a carpet that hasn't been deep cleaned can smell worse in humid months than a clean one.

What you can check yourself

Map where it smells and feels damp

Walk the room and note whether it is the whole floor or one area. One area points to a spill, pet accident or leak. The whole room points to humidity.

Press a dry white towel on the spot

Lay a dry towel on the carpet and press down with your hands or a flat object. Damp or discolored marks on the towel tell you moisture is in the carpet or pad, and the color or smell can hint at pet urine.

Look for nearby water sources

Check visually along baseboards, under sinks, near the water heater, below AC vents and by exterior doors and windows for stains, swelling, peeling paint or wet drywall. Don't open walls or touch electrical equipment.

Read your thermostat and note the AC

Check that the AC is cooling and running normal cycles, and whether the house feels clammy. If it runs constantly without cooling or the air feels weak, mention it to a pro.

Improve airflow and dry the area

Open the blinds, run ceiling fans, and use a dehumidifier or fan on the damp spot if you have one. If the carpet is still damp or smelly after a day or two of drying, something deeper is going on.

When to call a pro

Stop and get a pro if the dampness keeps coming back, covers a large area, follows a storm, flood or leak, or comes with visible dark or fuzzy growth, a strong urine smell, or sneezing and breathing irritation indoors. Don't keep running a wet vacuum over it, because surface drying can hide a soaked pad.

Carpet cleaning doesn't need a state construction or trade license in Florida. Operators generally need a local business tax receipt and normal business insurance, which you can confirm with the county tax collector. If the source is a plumbing leak or an AC problem, Florida requires a licensed plumbing contractor or a licensed air-conditioning contractor for that work, and you can verify any license on the Florida DBPR website. Significant mold or water damage may also involve separately regulated mold assessment and remediation, so verify that with DBPR. We match you with a vetted pro near you to start with the carpet.

Your MB pro handles the permit when the job needs one. You can look up a contractor's license at Florida DBPR.

What your MB pro will do

  • Find out how deep the problem goesYour MB pro will look at the carpet, check for moisture and odor, and tell you whether cleaning will solve it or whether a leak or humidity problem needs fixing first.
  • Hot-water extractionHot-water extraction pulls out dirt, allergens and trapped moisture, then the carpet is left to dry properly. Stairs and traffic lanes can be included.
  • Pet stain and odor treatmentUrine that reached the backing or pad needs treatment that gets to the source. Surface cleaning alone often leaves the smell behind.
  • Upholstery, rugs, tile and groutIf furniture, area rugs or grout are holding the same musty smell, your pro can clean them too, and seal porous grout so it stops holding dirt.

Related questions

Can musty carpet make my family sick?
Mold, mildew, dust mites and dander can irritate allergies and breathing in some people. If anyone has symptoms that ease when they leave the house, mention it when you request an estimate and call a doctor for health concerns.
Will cleaning get rid of the musty smell?
If the smell comes from dirt and light mildew, deep cleaning usually helps. If the pad is soaked or there is an ongoing leak or humidity problem, the smell can return until the source is fixed.
How can I keep carpet from getting damp again?
Keep the AC running properly, use a dehumidifier in closed-up rooms, and fix leaks and wet spills quickly. Regular deep cleaning also removes the dirt that holds moisture.
What should I ask the pro before they start?
Ask how they check for moisture in the pad, how they treat odor at the source, how long drying takes, and where wastewater goes. It should go to the sanitary sewer, not a storm drain. Get a free estimate first: call (954) 707-6550 or use the form on this page.
