Why is my water bill suddenly higher when I'm not using more water?

The most common reason is water going somewhere you can't see: a leaking toilet, a dripping fixture, an irrigation line, or a supply line leaking underground or under the slab. The meter counts every drop that passes through it, so a quiet leak can raise your bill even though your habits haven't changed.

The bill itself can also change without a leak. A longer billing period, an estimated meter read, or a rate change by your utility can all raise the total, so look at the bill's dates and usage figures before you assume a plumbing problem.

Why it happens

Toilets are a frequent culprit. A worn flapper or fill valve can let water trickle into the bowl all day and night with no sound you'd notice. Dripping faucets, a leaking hose bib, or a water heater relief valve that weeps can add up the same way.

Outside, a cracked irrigation line, a stuck sprinkler zone, or a pool auto-fill can use a lot of water, especially in Florida's heat when systems run often. Heavy wet-season rain can also shift soil and stress buried lines.

The harder cases are the ones you can't see. Supply pipes can corrode or fail underground or beneath a concrete slab, and aging pipe such as polybutylene or galvanized can fail without warning. These leaks may show only as a rising bill, a warm spot on the floor, or the sound of running water when everything is off.

What you can check yourself

Read the bill first

Compare the number of days in the billing period and whether the read was actual or estimated. A longer period or an estimate can explain a jump without any leak.

Do a meter test

Turn off every fixture and appliance, then look at your water meter. If the leak indicator or low-flow dial is still moving, water is going somewhere in the system.

Try a toilet dye test

Put a few drops of food coloring in each toilet tank and wait without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, that toilet is leaking.

Look and listen

Check under sinks, around the water heater, and at outdoor hose bibs for drips or damp spots. Listen for hissing or running water in the walls, and note any warm or damp patches on the floor.

Check irrigation and pool fill

Look for soggy ground, pooling water, or sprinkler zones running when they shouldn't. Confirm any pool auto-fill is behaving normally.

When to call a pro

Call a pro if the meter keeps moving after you've ruled out toilets and outdoor water, if you find a warm or damp spot on the floor, hear water running with everything off, or see water stains on walls or ceilings. Do not dig, cut into drywall, or break into a slab yourself. Finding a hidden leak takes the right equipment.

Florida requires plumbing work to be done by a licensed plumbing contractor under chapter 489, Florida Statutes, and a building or roofing license does not cover plumbing. You can verify a license on the Florida DBPR website. Replacing a water heater or re-piping a home typically needs a plumbing permit pulled by the contractor, while small repairs usually do not, so confirm with your local building department. We match you with a vetted pro near you. MB matches homeowners with a plumbing pro in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties only.

Your MB pro handles the permit when the job needs one. You can look up a contractor's license at Florida DBPR.

What a pro will do

  • Locate the leakYour MB pro will pinpoint where the water is escaping, including slab leaks and buried supply lines, so repairs are targeted instead of exploratory.
  • Repair fixtures and valvesToilet parts, faucets, relief valves and hose bibs can usually be repaired quickly once the source is confirmed.
  • Assess water heater and pipe conditionIf the water heater is leaking or the supply pipe is aging polybutylene or galvanized, the pro can explain repair versus re-piping or replacement and handle any permit.
  • Explain the options and ask the right questionsAsk what was found, whether it is a spot repair or a bigger replacement, whether a permit is needed, and for the license number to check with DBPR.

Related questions

Can I have a leak with no wet spots anywhere?
Yes. Leaks in buried lines or under a slab may never show on the surface, and a toilet leak runs straight down the drain. That is why the meter test is the most reliable first check.
Will my water utility adjust the bill if I had a leak?
Some utilities offer leak adjustments and some do not, and the rules differ by utility. Call yours, ask about their policy, and keep the repair paperwork from your pro.
What decides the cost of fixing a hidden leak?
The main factors are where the leak is, how hard it is to reach, what the pipe is made of, whether a permit is needed, and what the pro finds once the area is opened up. Your MB pro gives a free estimate after seeing the situation.
Should I shut off the water while I wait for a pro?
If you see active leaking or water damage, shutting off the main valve is a reasonable step. If the leak is only showing on the meter, you can often leave the water on and wait for the visit.
