Why does my carpet smell like pet urine again a few days after cleaning?

Because the cleaning only reached the carpet face fibers, while the urine is still in the backing, the pad and sometimes the subfloor underneath. As the carpet dries, moisture and warmth wake up the urine salts and bacteria below, and the odor wicks back to the surface within a few days.
The nuance: a surface shampoo or a rented machine can actually make it worse for a while, because adding water rehydrates dried urine crystals that had gone quiet. Pet odor usually needs a treatment that penetrates to the same depth the urine did — or, where the pad is saturated, pad replacement in that area.
Why it happens
A pet accident does not stay on top of the carpet. Liquid passes through the face yarn, through the backing, into the pad and often to the tack strip or subfloor, spreading wider underneath than the spot you see. Cleaning the top three-eighths of an inch leaves the reservoir intact.
Urine dries into crystals that are largely odorless until humidity returns. Add water — from cleaning, a damp day, or a mop — and the crystals dissolve and bacteria go back to work. In Florida that trigger is almost constant: year-round humidity keeps indoor materials damp enough to keep the cycle going, and running the AC colder does not remove the source.
Repeat accidents in the same spot compound it. Pets return to a place they can still smell, so one untreated area quietly becomes several layers of old and new urine, which is why the smell can come back stronger after each cleaning.
What you can check yourself
Find the real edges of the spot
Look at the carpet in daylight and from a low angle — urine stains spread wider than the visible ring. Note how many separate areas you can see, not just the one you know about.
Do a smell test close to the floor
Kneel down and smell near the carpet in suspect areas, especially along walls and in corners. If the odor is strong at floor level and faint when you stand, the source is in the backing or pad, not the fibers.
Notice when the smell peaks
If it gets worse on humid days, after mopping, or a day or two after cleaning, that is the classic sign of urine still in the pad rehydrating. Mention this timing to the pro.
Check for a damp or musty note underneath
A sour, mildew-like smell mixed with the urine can mean the pad has stayed wet, or that there is a separate moisture source such as a slow leak or condensation. Point out any area that feels cooler or damp underfoot.
Count the accidents
Write down roughly how many accidents happened in each room and how long ago. Volume and age change what treatment will actually work.
When to call a pro
Call when the odor returns after cleaning, when more than one spot is involved, when an older pet has been going in the same place for months, or when you smell mildew along with the urine. Those all point below the carpet face, where a home machine cannot reach.
Carpet cleaning does not require a state construction or trade license in Florida — operators generally just need a local business tax receipt from the county and/or city, and you can verify local registration with the county tax collector. No building permit is required for carpet cleaning, though wastewater should go to a sanitary sewer rather than a storm drain. If the dampness turns out to come from a leak or flooding rather than pets, say so: significant water damage work in Florida involves separately regulated mold assessment and remediation licensing, which you can verify with DBPR.
Your MB pro handles the permit when the job needs one. You can look up a contractor's license at Florida DBPR.
What a pro will do
- Locate every affected areaYour MB pro inspects the carpet, backing and edges to map the full extent of the contamination, not just the stains you can see.
- Treat the source, not the surfacePet stain and odor treatment is applied to reach the depth the urine reached, followed by hot-water extraction to flush the dissolved residue out of the fibers and backing.
- Address the pad where neededWhere the pad or subfloor is saturated, your MB pro will explain what has to be lifted, treated or replaced, because no amount of top-down cleaning fixes a soaked pad.
- Dry it properlyFast drying matters in Florida humidity — slow drying is what lets odor and mildew come back. Ask the pro how long the carpet should take to dry and how to help it.
- Handle the rest of the floorThe same visit can cover stairs, traffic-lane spotting, area rugs and upholstery, plus tile and grout deep cleaning and grout sealing if urine has reached hard floors nearby.

Related questions
- What should I ask the carpet cleaner before they start?
- Ask whether the treatment reaches the backing and pad or only the fibers, what happens if the odor returns, and how long drying should take. Also ask whether they recommend lifting the carpet in the worst areas rather than cleaning over it.
- Will deodorizer or an air freshener fix it?
- No — masking products cover the smell for a few days while the urine source stays in place. Once the cover scent fades, the odor returns, and repeat pets keep using the same spot.
- Does the pad always have to be replaced?
- Not always. Light or recent accidents often respond to a deep pet odor treatment and extraction, while heavy, repeated or long-standing saturation usually means the pad in that area has to come out. Your MB pro will tell you which situation you have after inspecting it.
- What does pet odor treatment cost?
- It depends on the number and size of the affected areas, how long the urine has been there, whether the pad or subfloor is involved, the carpet type, and how many rooms and stairs are included. Your MB pro gives a free estimate after seeing the floor.
